Ontario's Senior Licence Renewal Process
In Ontario, drivers above the age of 80 are required to participate in a licence renewal session every two years. This is an MTO requirement designed to ensure that senior drivers can continue to operate a vehicle safely. The renewal process includes several components:
- A vision test to ensure your eyesight meets the minimum driving standard.
- A Driver Record Review to check your driving history for recent violations or collisions.
- A 45-minute Group Education Session (GES) that reviews safe driving practices and common road situations.
- Two brief written screening exercises to test your knowledge of road rules and driving scenarios.
- Completing any required follow-up items for the MTO driver improvement counsellor.
How Golden Key Can Help
The renewal process can feel stressful, especially if you haven't taken a driving course in decades. Golden Key Driving School offers two services specifically designed for senior drivers to help you feel prepared and confident:
Senior Refresher Lesson
$85
A one-hour, one-on-one in-car lesson with a certified instructor. This session is designed to refresh your driving skills, address any habits that may have developed over the years, and give you a chance to practice in real road conditions with professional guidance.
Senior Evaluation
$95
A comprehensive driving evaluation where an instructor assesses your current skills and provides honest, constructive feedback. This is particularly useful if you've been asked to complete a road test as part of your renewal, or if you simply want to know where you stand.
What to Expect During Your Session
Whether you choose a refresher lesson or evaluation, your instructor will pick you up from your home and conduct the session on familiar local roads. There is no pressure and no judgment — our instructors are patient and experienced in working with senior drivers.
During the session, you will practice everyday driving scenarios including:
- Navigating intersections, traffic lights, and stop signs.
- Making safe left and right turns.
- Maintaining proper speed and following distance.
- Checking mirrors and blind spots effectively.
- Parking and manoeuvring in tight spaces.
After the session, your instructor will provide clear feedback on your strengths and any areas that may need attention. This information can be invaluable when preparing for the renewal process.
